Pride
in Progress
The theme of Helsinki Pride Week 2021 is Pride in Progress.
Milestones towards an equal world
An equal world is not yet complete. It is a work in progress aimed at ensuring that in the future everyone can freely be themselves. Sometimes change is made through marching in a parade or demonstration, sometimes by providing new tools for the community and its allies. Things change when they are changed.
The year 2021 is a special anniversary year as it has been:
- 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality
- 40 years since the removal of homosexuality from the mental health classification
- 30 years since the founding of the Helsinki Pride community
Our history includes many victories for human rights. These milestones and the people and stories behind them deserve to be celebrated and respected. Now is the time to advocate for the community and human rights in a way that we can proudly celebrate our history in the future as well. Change is still needed in both attitudes and structures.
The Helsinki Pride community works year-round for the community and human rights in order to create a change for the better. We demand amendments to the Trans Act and concrete actions for an equal, safe and diverse Finland. We support and increase knowledge of the status, existence and rights of the entire rainbow community.
We highlight grievances such as discrimination faced by sexual and gender minorities, and demand support and justice for all of us. Together with the community and our partners, we want to build a society in which discrimination based on belonging to a gender or sexual minority is history.
Pride in progress celebrates the belief in progress and will spread all over Finland this year. The traditional Pride parade will be organized virtually this year and will help spread the message of equality to different parts of Finland. The responsibility for building an equal society lies with everyone, and the work does not end when the rainbow flags are lowered at the end of Pride Week.
Helsinki Pride will be celebrated again this year on 28.6-4.7.2021. We warmly welcome all individuals, communities and organizations to participate in the celebration and work for human rights and equality! You can participate in Helsinki Pride in many different ways during the celebration week, both virtually and live, taking into account the corona recommendations. Check out the program of the week, follow the Pride concert on 3.7. and take part in the online parade all week long!
